Résumé

Phasing out greenhouse gas emissions will be perhaps the greatest engineering challenge of the 21st century, and it will be driven by a combination of regulatory and market forces. The impact of those forces on the industries providing indoor comfort and food preservation is likely to be substantial, requiring a fundamentally different approach to management of technological innovation from research through product development. To succeed in this, new environment companies must first anticipate the evolution of "green values" throughout the world, and understand the extent to which the price of energy will rise in response before reaching some "backstop" level. Secondly, they must simultaneously anticipate the response of their customers as they redesign the larger systems that HVAC&R technologies serve. With such knowledge, the most aggressive companies can pursue new business strategies that leapfrog over incremental technology developments, in pursuit of fundamental innovations that can serve both public and private interests in a sustainable world.
