Résumé

One of the standard composite insulation systems for cryogenic applications consists of a layer of hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) followed by a layer of variable density multilayer insulation (VDMLI) comprised of various internal profiles of reflectors and spacers. In this work, the thermal performance of the HGM-VDMLI insulation of a Dewar system containing liquid nitrogen is studied analytically for pressure-leak conditions to estimate optimal thicknesses for each layer and find a suitable VDMLI configuration. Considering the microstructural effects of the HGM assembly, a unit cell-based model for the HGM thermal conductivity is validated with existing experimental values for a vacuum pressure range. The heat leakage through it is then evaluated for two vessel sizes from high vacuum (0.0133 Pa) to atmospheric (105 Pa) pressures. Then, to characterize VDMLI performance in combination with the HGMs, four arithmetic progression-based VDMLI profiles (linearly increasing with no-repeating and once-repeating spacer layers) are studied.
