Résumé

Over the past 10 years or so, different projects have been completed at the Royal Institute of Technology where reduction of refrigerant charge has been one of the main goals. The most important motivation for this research has been to allow the safe use of natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons and ammonia. Reduction of charge would also be motivated while using synthetic refrigerants as it would reduce the losses in the case of a leak.
This paper will present an overview of the results from some of these projects. In the paper, designs of highly compact water-to-water heat pump systems with propane and ammonia as refrigerant are described. The charge distribution in one of these systems is presented, pointing to the necessity of using highly compact heat exchangers. Results from tests with evaporation in single tubes of diameters around 1 mm are also presented. Knowledge of heat transfer and pressure drop in minichannels is of crucial importance for the design of ultra-compact heat exchangers.
