Résumé

A heat pump water heater using carbon dioxide in the transcritical cycle connected to a stratified hot water cylinder (HWC) was developed. The heat pump used a vented helical double tube heat exchanger for the key gas cooling and water heating heat transfer. The heat pump performance was measured across a wide range of operating conditions. For a water outlet temperature of 60°C, the measured COP was between 2.1 and 3.7 and the heating capacity was between 4.5 and 8.6 kW when discharge pressure was 105 bars/g and evaporation temperature and water inlet temperatures were between 0 and 15°C and 19 and 30°C respectively. Improved compressor efficiency and gas cooler performance were significant opportunities to improve energy efficiency. The stratified HWC provided an effective thermal storage that consistently kept the heat pump inlet water temperature low and the water supply temperature high.
