Résumé
Refrigerants perform best when thermodynamic properties are matched to surrounding conditions and system design. The lubricant option for each refrigerant candidate is also an important match to help improve optimization. There are several refrigerant selections and compressor designs requiring lubricants to protect bearing operation and other system components. Matching the best lubricant to the refrigerant requires testing, sometimes from experience and sometimes from trial and error; ultimately moving toward compressor and system evaluation and operation. This paper will look at best practices for qualifying lubricants, newer methods supporting future lubricant choices and challenges associated with maintaining and enhancing performance. Lubricant options for next generation lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants will be discussed. Focus will be on lower GWP refrigerants representing future sustainability and matching lubricants that support enhanced performance and reliability. Techniques specific to qualifying interaction properties of lubricants and refrigerants will be described. Lubricant options based on these corresponding techniques will be cited. These options will give a snapshot into development based on type of system and size of the equipment. Refrigerant options that are key to reducing GWP levels along with maintaining efficiency will be considered. Some lower GWP refrigerants will require different lubricants or optimization of currently used lubricants to be successful. Chemical, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties critical to refrigerants, lubricants and compressors will provide direction on matching the various candidates.
