Heat pumps and working fluids for the future.

Résumé

It is important to distinguish between heat pumps and heat pumping technologies. The latter includes all types of refrigeration equipment where a temperature level below the ambient is sustained by supplying either mechanical work (electricity) or heat to the heat-pumping unit (heat is pumped from a low temperature level to a high). The paper restricts itself to the first group, the heat pumps. Refrigeration cycles (of all kinds) cannot be replaced in a similar fashion. It starts with a review of some typical heat pump applications, a discussion of performance numbers and the fundamental thermodynamics required for comparing different types of heat pumping cycles. This section is followed by a review of available heat pump cycles and finally with a more in depth working fluid discussion concerning vapour compression heat pumps.
