Résumé

This study presents a novel experimental investigation of a pressure exchanger (PX) device integrated with a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system. Unlike conventional reciprocating machines, a PX enables more efficient energy transfer between high- and low-pressure refrigerant streams, offering substantial power savings. This is accomplished by recovering expansion work, which would otherwise be lost in conventional expansion valves, to compress a fraction of the low-pressure gas also simultaneously achieve expansion of the high-pressure CO2, thereby reducing the load on the main compressor.
This work experimentally analyses the compression and expansion phenomena occurring within the rotor ducts of the PX using high-frequency pressure transducers to capture the propagation of acoustic waves. Experiments were conducted over high- and low-side pressures ranging from 75 – 100 bar and 20 – 36 bar, respectively. The PX was found to achieve pressure lifts (37 – 46 bar) significantly higher compared to the ejectors. However, the mass boost ratio was found to be relatively lower (5.9 – 11.4%). The PX also exhibited significantly higher efficiency (33 – 70%) compared to ejectors.
