Overheating prevention in a low energy building using the free cooling technique.

Résumé

The article presents the study of using free cooling for cooling the low energy building. In the mechanical ventilation system latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is integrated containing spheres encapsulated with commercially available parafin RT20. Using developed LHTES numerical model temperature response functions in form of Fourier series were established for daily periodic oscillation of ambient temperature. The temperature response function is used in the TRNSYS building thermal response model. Simulations show that free cooling is a promising technique for preventing overheating of low energy buildings. Free cooling helps reduce the size of the mechanical ventilation system, provides more favourable temperatures and therefore better thermal comfort conditions and fresh air for the occupants throughout the day.
