Résumé

Recent advances in cooling load computation methods, such as the ASHRAE recommended Radiant Time Series (RTS) method, coupled with the increasing power and versatility of computers, enabled the author to take a closer look at the main factors affecting the cooling load. Not only can these loads now be computed with greater accuracy, but the author was also able to gain a better insight into the various heat flow paths, their relative importance, and how they affect the total cooling load of the individual rooms and the entire building. In this article, the principles of the RTS method are briefly described. The RTS method is then employed to illustrate, by way of examples, the effects of significant yet frequently overlooked factors influencing the cooling load.
