Proposition pour l'évaluation thermique d'emballages isolés destinés au transport de denrées périssables.

Proposal for determining the thermal rating of insulated packages intended for the transport of perishables.

Auteurs : SHARP A., ORSZULOK E.

Résumé

Thermally insulating packages are used widely to transport small quantities of perishables by road, rail or air. The authors propose a standardised way of measuring and reporting their thermal performance. Measuring the rate of melting of ice placed within the package was found to be inconvenient, slow and not very repeatable. Instead we adopted the internal heating method widely used to characterise insulated freight containers and road vehicles, expressing the result as an overall heat transfer coefficient. The main disadvantage of heating, as opposed to cooling is that the mean wall temperature is somewhat higher than that experienced in normal use. This can be corrected by adjusting the measured value according to the previously determined characteristics of that type of package. With both internal cooling and internal heating methods there is a need to standardise the ambient conditions during the test; we describe a test apparatus developed for this purpose.
