Résumé
Methanol and ethanol have attracted attentions as fuels for fuel cells for many advantages including high volumetric energy density (methanol 15.9 MJ/L, ethanol 18.4 MJ/L at STP) compared to one of hydrogen (0.01 MJ/L at STP), chemical stability, and low price. Recently, many interesting attempts to synthesize ethanol from cheap and non-edible bio-resources such as seaweed are reported. This effort is acknowledged very important for economic development of clean or CO2-neutral energy resources alternative to fossil fuels. Use of alcohol in fuel cells is considered as the most efficient for production electricity from liquid fuels due to direct ejection of electrons by electrochemical reactions with minimized emission of waste heat. At low temperature operation of alcohol fuel cells, Pt-Ru has been reported as the best-performing catalysts as Pt is the most effective for the deprotonating process while Ru is the most effective for oxidation of CO that passivates Pt catalysis. In case O2--conducting electrolyte, however, it is possible to use pure alcohol whereas the conventional direct alcohol fuel cells with H+-conducting membranes needs at least 50% of water dilution. At this presentation, we will discuss recent progresses on our studies about direct alcohol solid oxide fuel cells with Pt-Ru heterogeneous anodic catalysts. For synthesis of Pt-Ru alloys, we have used atomic layer deposition technique. We have evaluated I-V performance at 300-500 °C in comparison with Pt-cells. Carbon-products have been also analyzed after cell operation by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
