Résumé
Actions taken by the international community to offset the impacts of ozone depletion and climate change are a cause for continuous turbulence and development in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning. This pushed experts, agencies and industries to develop non-chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) alternative technologies to replace existing CFC refrigeration systems. The new alternatives are evaluated based on a number of new indicators such as Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP), Global Warming Potential (GWP), COP and energy efficiency. Replacing old CFC centrifugal chillers is the best option considering the remaining lifetime, cost implications and the benefits in terms of energy savings that may be realized from replacing them. The available chillers' alternative technologies are described based on the refrigerant type, compressor type, cooling capacities, new improved control, etc. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) prepared a regional project for replacement of CFC centrifugal chillers in Serbia & Montenegro, Croatia, Romania and Macedonia for the consideration of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol. Input data on CFC centrifugal chillers in these countries is based on the reports of surveys conducted by national experts. Concrete examples on the environmental benefits and energy savings of chiller replacement are presented. The paper also describes the financial mechanisms, such as concessional lending, proposed by UNIDO to support owners to purchase a new chiller.
