The article is an extract from BSRIA's fourth edition of its "Rules of thumb" guide. Its purpose is to provide engineers in the initial stages of designing a building and its services with some of the most common rules in one document. These are a useful aid when it comes to tackling areas such as feasibility planning, assessing overall loads, space requirements and the initial costs of the services.
