Résumé

The scarcity of natural resources and the current agitation of world-wide economies have led to a significant increase in energy costs. New approaches in building design to achieve higher energy performance lead to the implementation of passive systems. Portugal is one of the European countries with higher potentialities for the exploitation of renewable energy resources, for instance solar and wind energy. In this context, this paper presents a study based on the application of phase change material (PCM) panels with different fusion temperatures, introduced into the partition walls and the suspended ceiling of an open space room of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Aveiro in order to understand the influence of its application, for the cooling and heating demands. It was verified that in the cooling period the evolution of the indoor temperature with PCMs suffered a significant time lag and attenuation of the temperature swing. During the heating period the PCMs storage capacity, acts as a thermal-regulator. The analysis that was carried out using the trombe wall, led to conclude that the optimized solution depends on the type of materials used and their dimensions. With the application of this passive strategy in this case study an increase of significant solar fraction value can be achieved that leads to a reduction of the heating demand.
