Résumé

Gadolinium, a ferromagnetic refrigerant with a Curie temperature near 293 K, is a well-studied material in magnetic refrigeration that is a new environment friendly refrigeration technology and a promising alternative to conventional vapour-cycle refrigeration. Among the magnetic refrigerants, Gd occupies a prominent position due to its high magnetic entropy change and excellent tractability. However, the poor resistance to corrosion in water is a serious impediment against a wider application of Gd in magnetic refrigeration. In this paper, the pitting behaviours of commercial Gd were studied by weight loss and electrochemical measurements. In order to inhibit the corrosion of Gd in water, NaOH solution was chosen as inhibitor. No pitting corrosion and weight loss were observed for commercial Gd after long time immersion in NaOH solution. By X-ray photoemission spectra investigation, the inhibition is due to the formation of Gd(OH)3.
