Résumé

It is shown that the intrinsic buffering power measured in the absence of exogenous bicarbonate is about threefold higher in mitochondria than in the cytosol and depends on the pH values in each cell compartment. The fact that pHmito always remained above 7 and that the buffering power remained elevated could constitute positive factors to protect mitochondria during cold ischemic organ preservation characterized by a large cytosolic acidosis. However, a prolonged acidosis could increase the membrane permeability, especially H+ condition, and then reduce the efficiency of energy coupling (and ATP synthesis) during postischemic reperfusion.
