2-circuit latent heat storage for waste heat utilization in fuel cell railcars: concept, design and experimental investigations.

Résumé

A 2-circuit latent heat storage is introduced, that utilizes phase change material and two separate fluid circuits for heat transfer. The system can operate both circuits independently, allowing for sequential or simultaneous charging and discharging processes. The combination of phase change material with a cellular metallic material improves heat conductivity, increasing the efficiency of the storage system and the heat transfer performance. A research project investigates the application of this storage system to utilize waste heat from a fuel cell powered railcar, improving energy efficiency and sustainability. By using the waste heat for heating and cooling the passenger compartment, the aim is to increase the railcar's range by up to 20 %. A 2-circuit latent heat storage is necessary to independently operate the fuel cell and the vehicle climate control system. The work focuses on the concept, design, and experimental investigations of the storage system. A scaled demonstrator was built for component and system tests, providing insights into the thermal behavior of the storage system.
