Résumé

Liquid-to-refrigerant heat exchangers (LRHXs) have been the topic of considerable research as they are critical components in many Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems, especially for supermarket applications. Recent advancements in computational tools (viz., Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA)), optimization (viz., adjoint and multi-objective methods), and advanced manufacturing (viz., additive techniques) have led researchers to expand conventional LRHX design ideology to apply shape and topology optimization to develop novel LRHXs with high heat transfer effectiveness and compactness. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review investigating the current state-of-the-art and potential next-generation liquid-to-refrigerant HX for use in supermarket applications. The fundamentals of model development, optimization, and experimental validations are all separately discussed. Studies featuring manufactured prototypes and/or experimentally validated optimal designs are treated with additional emphasis. This paper concludes by identifying key research gaps and proposing future research directions for LRHXs.
