Résumé

Most of the energy demand in the industrial sector is for heat, and there is potential for a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by replacing heating sources with heat pumps. The drying process consumes a relatively high percentage of energy in the industrial sector, however, the exhaust heat from the hot and humid exhaust air is often not effectively utilized. In this study, a latent heat recovery by desiccant in addition to sensible heat recovery by a heat pump was proposed and numerically investigated. A heat exchanger coated with a smart hydrogel (SG) that adsorbs moisture and oozes water was used to recover the latent heat. The optimum value for the HP supply temperature was observed that minimizes the primary energy consumption. The proposed dryer could reduce the primary energy consumption by 34% compared to a conventional dryer. The primary energy consumption could be further reduced by enhancing the characteristics of SG.
