Simplified system for recovery of methane (CH4) gas from landfills.

Résumé

A traditional system for recovery of methane gas from larger landfills is typically based on several processing stages such as precooling/drying, gas compression, removal of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and trace gases, followed by methane enrichment by carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption. For smaller landfills however, the amount of gas available is insufficient to justify the investment of a traditional recovery system as described above, resulting, in most cases, this energy source being flared to atmosphere. Through the past years, there has been an increasing focus on environmental issues, which in turn has caused local authorities to show a greater interest in systems that may exploit energy sources from smaller landfills. Therefore, a project has been initiated with the objective to develop and test a low cost system for recovery of methane gas from smaller landfills, based on membrane technology. The system is based on a combination of specific membrane characteristics and process optimisation techniques. Preliminary estimates indicate a recovery and gas quality that is acceptable from a technical as well as economical point of view.
