CO2 was used for many years before the Second World War, but after this, CO2 disappeared rapidly and was replaced by synthetic refrigerants and NH3. Over the last three years, three CO2 cascade supermarket systems have been installed in the Copenhagen area. The experience has been good. CO2 is used in the entire supermarket and only a very small charge has been used on the high-temperature side of the cascade system. Also, industrial systems have been introduced onto the market. On fishing vessels, the new refrigeration system makes it possible to obtain higher prices for the fish frozen in the plate freezers after the introduction of hot-gas defrost of the freezer. The fish on the top are not damaged during the whole process as normally seen. Also, safety is not considered to be an issue. All precautions are taken to avoid problems. The only problems seen in a CO2 system are related to the presence of large amounts of water. The paper also discusses a major power black-out in 2003 in the southern part of Sweden and the eastern part of Denmark. Only minor problems where reported.
