Résumé

The exploration of low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants to replace popular high GWP refrigerants is crucial in tackling climate change. Several low GWP and non-flammable refrigerant blends have been developed; R-473A and LFR3. R-473A offers an alternative solution to R-23 and R-508 in specialist cold-chain applications such as storing and preserving consumable goods, biomedical transport, storage and for environmental testing chambers. LFR3 is an improved version of R-744 and holds potential for transitioning residential heat pumps. Additionally, LFR3 is an attractive candidate for use in the growing electric vehicle heat pump market. Since both LFR3 and R-473A have relatively low critical temperatures (~30 °C) and are blends that may fractionate if not handled properly, we have developed new procedures for the method of charging and recovering 98% product to and from a refrigeration system operating with R-473A and LFR3. Newly developed field compositional analysis techniques have been included as part of the study to ensure quality control measures and end user needs are met.
