Résumé
To mitigate the flammability risk of propane used in light commercial applications like beverage coolers, reduction of refrigerant charge to levels below legal limits is required. This has been accomplished by employing experimentally validated simulation models used to predict the refrigerant charge in each component at different ambient conditions, focusing on the condenser and the compressor oil which dissolves large quantities of propane. A serpentine style wire and tube condenser with small internal diameter design; low fin density was implemented for a 700L cooler with 700 cans of 355ml. While a RTPF design was implemented for a 1000L cooler with 1100 cans of 355 ml. The cooling capacities were on the order of 1kW using propane refrigerant charge of less than or equal to 120g for both coolers. The coolers were experimentally validated at an ambient temperature of 40°C and 75% relative humidity and passed the manufacturers’ half-reload times and energy consumption requirements.
