The conventional and rotating magnetocaloric effect of a gadolinium parallel plate magnetic regenerator - influence of geometry.

Résumé

The demagnetizing field-based rotating magnetocaloric effect (RMCE) enables magnetocaloric refrigerator or heat pump designs without magnetic field intensity switching, only rotation. To use the magnetic field source efficiently and optimal thermal performance, the magnetocaloric material (MCM) should be maximally packed in the magnetic field region. However, this tends to reduce the anisotropy of the MCM shape, thereby reducing the RMCE. In this work, we explore the magnetostatic properties of a gadolinium parallel plate regenerator within a cylindrical Halbach array. The impact of the filling factor (F) on the conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and RMCE is investigated for magnetic fields between 0.4 T and 2.0 T. We compute the specific cooling energy, magnet volume, and ΔTad, and find that the RMCE and MCE have distinct optimal configurations: 0.6 T and F≈0.5 for RMCE, and 1.0 T and F→1 for MCE.
