Résumé

In the present study, an experimental investigation into the heat transfer performance and rheology of a 16 wt.% paraffin-in-water dispersion during crystallisation is presented. The local and average convective heat transfer coefficients were calculated under transient cooling in a rectangular channel for different Reynolds numbers and channel inlet temperatures. The average heat transfer coefficients displayed a general trend of decreasing with a decrease in temperature, except for during the crystallisation temperature range, where an increase in the average heat transfer coefficient was observed. Additionally, the heat transfer coefficients increased with an increase in the Reynolds number. Rheological analysis showed that the phase change dispersion is a non-Newtonian behaviour, with pressure drops higher than those of water. Despite this, a figure of merit analysis highlighted that the phase change dispersion showed superior heat transfer fluid behaviour to water at all investigated Reynolds numbers for an inlet temperature of 18ᵒC, for Reynolds numbers above 600 at 8ᵒC and for Reynolds numbers above 900 for an inlet temperature of 5ᵒC.
