Résumé
A two-dimensional numerical model of a thermal energy storage system equipped with an immersed helicalcoil
heat exchanger and filled with a microencapsulated phase change slurry is developed and experimentally
validated. The slurry consists of paraffin phase change material encapsulated within a polymeric shell and
dispersed in water, enabling an increased energy storage density through latent heat while preserving fluidity
and relatively high convective heat transfer capability. Owing to its non-Newtonian rheological behavior and
strongly temperature-dependent thermophysical properties, the slurry exhibits complex heat transfer
characteristics. In the CFD model, heat transfer is implemented using wall temperature boundary condition
and the slurry thermophysical properties functions are interpolated from experimental data. Despite the
geometrical simplifications, the numerical model accurately reproduces the thermal transient evolution of the
storage fluid. Charging and discharging processes are simulated and compared for both water-based and slurrybased
storage configurations. The results indicate that the higher slurry viscosity leads to reduced convective
heat transfer coefficients compared to water. Consequently, lower power density and longer thermal response
times are observed, despite the higher amount of energy stored at the end of the charging process, highlighting
the need for a trade-off depending on the integrated system design.
