Résumé
This work presents a real-scale experimental investigation of a latent thermal energy storage (LTES) unit operating with two phase change materials (PCMs) characterized by the same nominal phase-change temperature of 48 °C: a bio-based non-flammable organic PCM and an inorganic hydrated salt. Both materials were tested in the same 0.1 m³ storage unit equipped with a finned-coil heat exchanger representative of residential heat pump applications. The experimental campaign focused on the charging process under identical thermal boundary conditions while varying the water flow rate between 4 and 8 l min⁻¹ at a constant inlet water temperature of 68 °C. Increasing the flow rate significantly enhanced the heat transfer rate, reducing
the charging time by more than 50% and increasing the peak thermal power by approximately a factor of three, while the total stored energy remained nearly independent of hydraulic conditions. The inorganic PCM stored substantially more energy than the organic material due to its higher density and volumetric latent heat, although longer charging times were required. The energy–time evolution shows similar normalized charging behavior for both materials, indicating that the process is mainly controlled by heat diffusion within the PCM rather than by water-side convection. The results provide experimentally validated performance data for fullscale PCM storage units and offer practical guidance for the selection of materials and operating conditions in medium-temperature heat pump applications.
