A simple model for steam absorption into aqueous lithium bromide.

Résumé

Absorption chillers for room air conditioning normally operate on water as refrigerant and lithium bromide as absorbent. Since the absorber is often considered to be the most critical component of an absorption machine, it is crucial to have a closer look on the ongoing processes there. Unfortunately, the coupled heat, mass and momentum transfer does not allow a complete analytical solution of the problem. In this paper a simplified model for laminar falling-film absorption on a horizontal tube is proposed. The model combines the features of the Nusselt theory for heat transfer, of a semi-infinite one-dimensional body for mass diffusion and uses the condition of phase equilibrium at the film surface. The model has been compared against experimental data and shows only fair agreement in heat transfer coefficient but good agreement in mass transfer coefficient. The results are discussed and possible improvement is outlined.
