An experimental study on the frosting in a heat exchanger using a fin bundle.

Résumé

An experimental study on the frosting phenomena in a heat exchanger was carried out using a fin bundle, which is an expanded model of fins used for heat exchanger. The fin bundle consisted of 40 flat plate fins made of copper was installed to cooling block made of copper, and it was also set up inside a rectangular duct made of transparent acrylic resin. The temperature of 11 selected fins is measured using 5 thermocouples in each fin. Effects of fin root temperature (cooling block temperature), humidity and velocity of air on overall characteristics of heat and mass transfer were investigated. It was found that effects of air humidity and fin root temperature on total frost mass were larger than that of air velocity. The local heat fluxes both in fin longitudinal direction and in direction from humid air to fin surface were also calculated by the approximate equation developed. The local heat fluxes in fin longitudinal direction as well as in direction from air to fin surface had the largest value at the root of fin and decreased toward the tip of the fin.
