Résumé

With the increasing use of air-source heat pumps, noise disturbance can be a barrier for further market growth and acceptance, especially in densely populated areas. The disturbance is both an issue for the owner of the heat pump and for the people in the neighborhood. The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of the outdoor noise generation of air-source heat pumps. For the customer the noise performance becomes more and more important in the selection of a heat pump unit and according to the recognized test method, the sound power level is determined at specific standard operating conditions. But as the energy performance is not constant in real life operation, the sound power level is likely to follow that behavior. Hence, the current test method does not provide a full picture of the noise performance in situ. This article shows that there are other factors than the absolute sound power level that may influence the disturbance of noise. The conclusion is that it is interesting to evaluate seasonal noise performance, something that is done within other disciplines such as traffic noise. The benefits of inverter technology (variable compressor speed) and its impact upon the seasonal noise performance are discussed in the paper.
