Résumé

This investigation reports on the use of commercial roofing panels to construct a heat exchanger where solar energy is abstracted and employed to provide heating for air circulation within the building. Within New Zealand this heat exchanger, which could be built into the wall structure, will generally be replaced on north-facing wall. The paper focuses on some preliminary experimental studies where laboratory and outdoor tests were conducted. These studies are directed towards the optimisation of the panel's thermal performance and the subsequent modelling of the panel in order to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of the system. The outdoor tests discussed in this paper were conducted using a purpose-built rig exposed to local weather conditions. The primary variables investigated are solar insolation, collector porosity, suction rate and local wind speed.
