Résumé

The supermarket chain Delhaize has been in Serbia for a number of years. Until resent the distribution of products for the local stores has been carried out from three different cold stores. Now the time and volume of products had come up to a level where it makes sense to build your own large distribution centre. Distribution and in-store handling are the parameters that Delhaize can directly influence cost wise. Efficient distribution and store management is the difference between making and losing money. The producers and the way they manage their part of the value chain give other costs. Delhaize can influence the process and packaging price and to a certain degree also the raw material cost but these cost are basically out of direct control of the chain. Delhaize also have a green profile. This was one of the reasons behind the selection of ammonia (NH3) as refrigerant. CO2 as a refrigerant was discussed during the process but finally it was decided to go for a direct ammonia system for low temperature and indirect ammonia/propylene glycol system for medium and high temperature. The size of the cold store and the time frame available made it a challenge to get it done in time. The project was finally finished in time and is now running to the satisfaction of the owner. This paper will discuss some of the challenges and questions raised during the project. Ventilation rate of the machine room was one of the topics. Another topic was prediction of the load and the probability of oversizing the system. Which compressors to select and how to run the system with lowest possible energy consumption was also a challenge, especially the first period where parts of the cold store are still not in use.
