Résumé

This study advances a strategy for selecting refrigerant charge and capillary tube for single-door refrigerators on the grounds of probabilistic approach to design. An experimental methodology, including not only a charging station but also an operating protocol, is introduced for automatic refrigerant charging with an uncertainty of ±0.3 g, and expansion device modulation with ±7.4 % uncertainty in terms of an equivalent capillary tube diameter obtained by means of nitrogen flow characterization. A semi-empirical system simulation model, using refrigerant charge and capillary tube diameter as inputs, was put forward, being able to predict energy consumption within ±5 % error bounds for 50 out of 51 experimental runs. A model-based uncertainty analysis
suggests avoiding refrigerant charge and capillary tube combinations that result in a superheating degree below 3◦C due to the capillary tube diameter manufacturing tolerance. Experimental tests were conducted for mapping energy consumption at steady-state and on-off compressor operation for different combinations of expansion restriction and refrigerant charge. The results indicate that a combination of expansion restriction and refrigerant charge leading to an evaporator superheating from 2 to 4◦C minimizes energy consumption during both steadystate and on-off operations. Moreover, a method for automatic selecting the refrigerant charge and capillary tube is proposed.
