Résumé

This paper presents the effort of improving the efficiency of conventional R744 systems by applying desiccant wheel-assisted separate sensible and latent cooling technology, as well as the addition of a suction line heat exchanger, divided heat exchangers, evaporative cooling, and an enthalpy wheel. The options of applying suction line heat exchanger and divided heat exchangers are discussed in detail in this paper. It was concluded that the suction line heat exchanger could improve the performance of R744 desiccant wheelassisted separate sensible and latent cooling systems by 12%. The parallel layout of divided heat exchangers was demonstrated to be more suitable for the separate sensible and latent cooling system than the serial layout, since it had lower air side pressure drop. The application of divided heat exchanger improved the COP of separate sensible and latent cooling system using single heat exchanger by 46%. Other energy saving options such as evaporative cooling, exhaust air evaporative cooling and the enthalpy wheel, resulted in extra COP improvements of 14%, 13% and 40%, respectively. The enthalpy wheel-desiccant wheel-assisted separate sensible and latent cooling system had the highest system COP of 5.87.
