Résumé

The performance of desiccant wheel (DW)-assisted separate sensible and latent cooling (SSLC) air-conditioning (AC) systems have been greatly improved by the application of divided heat exchangers (HXs), resulting in 12% and 61% increases in coefficient of performance (COP) for R410A and CO2 systems, respectively. A computer model was developed to simulate and optimizenew performance-enhancing options that include the addition of evaporative cooling, a sensible wheel (SW) and an enthalpy wheel (EW) to the vapor compression system (VCS). The application of evaporative cooling to the SSLC system with divided HX further improves the system COP by 8 and 17% for the R410A and CO2 systems, respectively. Meanwhile, the COP of the CO2 cycle exceeds its R410A counterpart. By applyingan EW to the DW assisted SSLC systems with divided HXs and evaporative cooling, the COP is improved by 73 and 68% for R410A and CO2 systems, respectively. The DW-assisted SSLC technology also can be adopted for the dedicated outdoor system (DOS). It is concluded that the SW is not suitable for the DW-assisted SSLC DOS systems. On the other hand, the EW is effective for enhancing the DW-assisted SSLC DOS systems because it lowers not only the cooling requirement of the VCS, but also the heat requirement for DW regeneration.
