Résumé

Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in the field of latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) due to their capacity to absorb and release a significant amount of heat during phase transitions. However, the low thermal conductivity of PCMs leads to a decrease in their melting efficiency. The incorporation of fins is highly beneficial for improving the performance of thermal energy storage systems. The study reveals that the main factor influencing the thorough melting of PCM is the presence of a melting hysteresis region at the bottom, resulting from natural convection phenomena affected by gravity. The present study introduces a topology optimization method that takes the melting hysteresis region into account, aiming for a more flexible fin design to enhance PCM heat conduction. In comparison with adding conventional rectangular fins to PCM melting, the topology optimization fin demonstrates enhanced heat conduction capacity, leading to a 55.2% reduction in melting time.
