Résumé

Building occupants play an essential role in energy efficiency improvement since their behavior impacts the energy use. In order to optimize the energy con-sumption while maintaining the occupants’ comfort indoors, which promotes their health and productivity, it is important to capture the actual occupant behaviors and comfort preferences that would affect the energy usage inside buildings. Preliminary results obtained from monitoring a residential house in Qatar are presented in this paper. An interactive sensing and monitoring system is utilized to capture the occupants’ energy related behavior, their indoor comfort preferences, the house energy use performance and the indoor environmental parameters to give an insight into how the occupants impact the energy use or may be impacted by the indoor conditions. Observations regarding the lighting and plug load devices use patterns are also highlighted. It is intended that this study will provide a pathway to understand the occupants’ indoor comfort preferences and energy use behaviors in a hot climate zone, and to facilitate the occupant centered energy efficiency enhancement.
