Analyse des accidents dans le domaine du froid.

Refrigeration accident analysis.

Auteurs : NOWACKI J. E., PALM B.

Résumé

This paper reports on the first findings of a study to document accidents connected to refrigeration equipment. One main purpose of the study was to compare the risks when using different refrigerants. Such information is important as a basis for decisions concerning safety standards and norms. A first conclusion from the study is that information on accidents is difficult to find. It is therefore suggested that the refrigeration community start registering severe accidents centrally in a database. The nuclear industry and the air-transport industry could serve as examples. A second conclusion is that accidents connected to refrigeration equipment are only rarely related to the refrigerant itself. With the information gathered so far, it is not possible to draw definite conclusions concerning the relative hazards of different types of refrigerants. However, it seems in general that few accidents occur, even when hydrocarbons and ammonia are used as refrigerants.
