Résumé

The building industry is one of the largest exploiters of natural resources, consumer of energy, producer of emissions and waste. It is estimated that operation of buildings account for nearly 40% of total consumed energy in Europe and therefore energy performance of buildings is today regarded as major issue. Development of high energy performance buildings is very significant in term of operational energy, but more materials and different components are applied, this is why the environmental relevance of building design has to be questioned. In order to contribute to answer this question, the paper is aimed at assessment of environmental performance. There are assessed the material compositions of structure alternatives of nearly zero energy residential building in this study. The results demonstrate importance of the choice of building materials in terms of reduction of the environmental burden. Structures of building envelope have significant influence on total energy balance: during the construction phase in the form of embodied energy and associated embodied emissions, during the operation phase as operational energy and associated emissions. The analysis of structure alternatives proves that materials from biomass improve environmental potential of building because they lock carbon in their mass and consume solar energy for production of raw resource.
