Numerical analysis of CO2 two-stage semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor working in a transcritical cycle for small freezing applications.

Résumé

The aim of this paper is to show the possibilities that carbon dioxide offers for commercial refrigeration at low evaporation temperatures (i.e, frozen conditions) considering a single stage trans-critical cycle and using two-stage semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors under small cooling capacity systems in comparison with one-stage reciprocating compressors. Based on a numerical simulation model for one-stage reciprocating compressors, an extensive numerical analysis has been developed in order to understand the thermal and fluid dynamic behaviour of this equipment when two compression chambers are in series. A comparative analysis under the same cooling capacity and working conditions of both the conventional R-134a subcritical cycle using hermetic reciprocating compressors and the CO2 transcritical cycle considering two-stage semi-hermetic compressors is also presented. The numerical results obtained show that, in all cases, two-stage compressors present a better COP, due to an important power consumption reduction under similar cooling capacities, finding the better 1st stage vs. 2nd stage optimum ratio.
