Résumé

This study reports the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal having the structural phase transition temperature near room temperature and magnetic transition near 390 K. The magnetic entropy change (?SM), at those two temperatures, was determined on the basis of M = f(T) curves, recorded at fields up to 1200 kA/m (15 kOe). The calculated values of ?SM are, however, relatively small, ~2-4 J/(kg*K). An interesting phenomenon can be observed when a magnetic field along different crystallographic directions in the single crystal is applied. The ?SM strongly depends on the orientation of the single crystal due to its high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The weakest MCE occurs when the field is applied along [0 0 1] direction, which is an easy magnetization axis, and the highest MCE value is reached along [1 -1 0] direction. The dependence of the number of magnetization-demagnetization cycles, around the SPT temperature, on the MCE, at room temperature, was determined.
