Résumé

The three plant complexes built for SASOL in South Africa during the period 1955-1982 for converting coal into hydrocarbon liquids are described. Refrigeration is used for separating oxygen from the air on a very large scale. It is also used for the methanol scrubbing of the crude gas, for separating this gas into its main components, including an olefine fraction, and for ethylene purification. The aggregate power consumption is more than 300 MW.
