Résumé

This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal "Renewable and sustainable energy reviews" (vol. 2, n. 1-2, 1998). It examines thermal comfort, low energy architecture dealing with various criteria for comfort in different parts of the world. It also explores how previous generations lived in harsh climates and without abundant sources of energy, yet designed and built appropriate dwellings providing both comfort and harmony with the environment. Contents: thermal comfort and the development of bioclimatic concept in building design; vernacular and contemporary buildings in Qatar; principles of thermal comfort; bioclimatism in vernacular architecture; the utilization of microclimate elements; daylighting; ventilation; technology for modern architecture.
