Résumé
Refrigeration systems represent a significant portion of energy use in supermarkets, with their performance strongly influenced by local climate conditions and their interactions with the building structure, HVAC system, and internal machinery. This study evaluates the energy performance of three refrigeration configurations for a medium-sized supermarket across three distinct Köppen climate zones: tropical (Douala, Cameroon), dry (Almería, Spain), and temperate (London, UK), using EnergyPlus building energy simulation software. The configurations analysed include an R-744 booster system, integral hydrocarbon cabinets with water-cooled condensers, and a hybrid setup combining integral air-cooled hydrocarbon frozen cabinets with remote R-744 chilled cabinets. Dynamic simulations were conducted to capture thermal loads, energy consumption, and refrigeration–HVAC interactions under diverse climates. By comparing these configurations across tropical, dry, and temperate climates, the study identifies the optimal refrigeration configuration for each location, providing guidance for energy-efficient supermarket design.
