Résumé
The sustainability benefits of HFO foam blowing agents for cellular insulation products and refrigerants used in refrigeration and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) have been previously documented for their respective end-uses. The Green House Gas (GWG) reductions derived from HFOs in comparison to incumbent HFCs are well established and provide a compelling basis for their transition in both insulation and refrigeration end-uses. Recent publications illustrate certain HFOs enable new levels of insulation performance in rigid foam thereby enhancing building envelope efficiencies and reducing environmental impacts associated with power generation. This paper will explore and quantify the potential combined sustainability benefits when the synergies of improved HFO insulation performance are matched with more efficient refrigeration and HVAC systems based on low GWP HFO refrigerants in commercial cold storage facility case studies. Both new construction and retrofit scenarios will be assessed relative to HFC and alternative based insulation and refrigeration technologies.
