Calibration du modèle numérique pour les systèmes de stockage d’énergie thermique latent à base de PCM composites.

Numerical model calibration for composite-PCM LTES.

Phase change materials (PCMs) loaded with metal foams are optimal materials for thermal storage systems. In this paper, a COMSOL numerical model is developed to simulate a case filled with paraffin PCMs, loaded with high-porosity metal foams and heated by an electric resistance from the top. Different models for the composite PCMs are compared to best fit a series of experimental outcomes. The results evidence how the estimation of the effective thermal properties (keff, (cp)eff) associated to the composite PCM is a critical issue. In particular, different keff values, estimated by a series of models proposed in the literature, bring to different temperature trends within the PCM. The results demonstrate how an acceptable agreement with the experimental findings cannot be reached by transforming the composite PCM into a homogeneous medium. The best fitting can be obtained by modifying the porous-media model in order to reproduce the effective conductivity value yielded by literature correlations.
