Résumé
As the demand for ‘cloud’ services and data center support increases, the demand for energy for these data centers also increases. According to the recently released book by ASHRAE technical committee 9.9, Datacom Equipment Power Trends and Cooling Applications, 2012, which looks out as far as the year 2020, there will be a steady increase in the requirements of power for data centers. There has been plenty of collaboration toward efficient solutions, but until now they have always needed support from a traditional power grid. In May 2012 Hewlett-Packard unveiled the first to achieve a net-zero data center. The design precisely matches the energy supply to the demand required by the IT equipment workload. Internally a demand-management approach allows the scheduling of IT workloads based on resource availability and performance requirements. The design incorporates energy and cooling from local renewable resources while pushing the boundaries of operation. This paper will provide insight as to the design approaches, internally and externally, to transform a normally energy-intensive building into a net-zero building. Also to be presented is the potential to operate data centers using local renewable resources, removing dependencies such as location, energy supply and costs.
