Optimiser la consommation énergétique des centres de données.

Optimizing data center energy consumption.

Auteurs : PURKAYASTHA I.

Résumé

The amount of energy consumed by world’s data centers is putting a strain on energy supplies and contributing indirectly to global warming. Every internet activity requires large amounts of data to be stored and acted upon by a data center somewhere. Whether it is “liking” someone on Facebook, downloading movies, internet of everything, driverless cars, mobile banking – all need a vast cadre of data centers to make it possible.
In 2016, 416 terawatt hours of energy was used by data centers worldwide, far higher than UK’s total consumption (300 terawatt hours). Some statistics indicate Data Centers have reached 3% of world’s electricity consumption and contribute to 2% of the total Greenhouse gas emission. This industry is not slowing down. It is expected to double in the next four years.
This talk will explain how we got here, what is contributing to this relentless growth and the high energy demand, and what efforts can be undertaken in the short term with existing data centers, focusing on activities that are actionable immediately. For purposes of brevity, this talk will exclude discussions on using renewable energy sources as an option to meet this burgeoning electricity demand.
