Résumé

This paper presents an experimental analysis of the air-side pressure drop of cross-flow minichannel condensers with open-cell metal foams to enhance the air side heat transfer. Different metal foam pore densities (10 and 20 PPI) and porosities (0.893 and 0.947) were combined to produce three metal foam structures. The experimental facility consisted of a closed-loop wind tunnel calorimeter and a refrigerant loop that allowed specification of the mass flow rate and thermodynamic state of R600a at the condenser inlet. The experiments were performed with condensing temperature of 45 and 90°C. The air flow rates ranged from 1.4 × 10(-3) to 3.3 × 10(-3) m3/s (corresponding to face velocities between 2.1 and 4.9 m/s). The friction factor was calculated as part of the analysis and the results were compared with correlations available in the literature for high-porosity porous media. The correlation due to Vafai and Tien (1982) exhibited the best agreement with the data.
