Résumé
To help provide a clearer understanding of the relative performance potential of R290 as compared with two HFCs (R404A and R410A) for commercial refrigeration, CEEE conducted an experimental evaluation program under ARI's GREEN Program. A 4 kW refrigeration system consisting of a unit cooler and a condensing unit, which was originally designed for R404A, served as the test unit. For safety reasons it was decided to minimize the charge of the R290 test unit by eliminating the refrigerant receiver. However, the impact of eliminating the receiver on system performance was evaluated. The condenser was also modified to contain a liquid subcooler circuit. Based on the optimization of the condenser, which is the most critical component of the low temperature commercial refrigeration system, a two circuit condenser was used for the testing of R410A while a three circuit condenser was used for the testing of R404A and R290. Under the same compressor efficiency assumption the COP improvement of R410A and R290 over R404A is 10% both for R410A and R290 under full load conditions and 4 and 5% for R410A and R290, respectively, under part load conditions. This result illustrates that the performance enhancement of R290 as compared to R404A is almost the same with R410A under both full load and part load conditions when the R410A compressor is optimized to the level of the R404A compressor.
